Nexa3D Signals Winding Down Operations
AM hardware company cites economy and industry climate
December 20, 2024
AM (Additive Manufacturing) hardware maker Nexa3D recently sent a notice to its customers, signaling scaling back.
The message reads, in part, “For the past eight years, Nexa3D has been proud to transform additive manufacturing with our ultrafast 3D printing solutions ... Unfortunately, like many others in our sector, we have faced significant funding challenges that have made it impossible for us to continue operations in their current form, and Nexa3D has taken the necessary steps to scale back accordingly.”
“Scale back” suggests reducing headcounts and continuing to operate in a more efficient fashion, but the company also says in the same message “We are actively working to provide solutions for service and consumables to allow continuity for your operations, but of course we cannot make any guarantees.”
The company has not yet responded to DE24/7's inquiry seeking clarification on its future.
In January of this year, Nexa3D acquired Essentium, which develops and sells high-speed extrusion (HSE) 3D printers and materials. At the time, Avi Reichental, Cofounder, Chairman, and CEO of Nexa3D, said, “This acquisition is more than a strategic move; it’s a testament to our shared vision to drive innovation and deliver solutions that redefine the production capabilities of 3D printing.”
In June, Nexa3D launched a new machine called Xyon, which prints with carbon-fiber filled plastic filament. Nexa3D offers machines that can print in thermoplastics, metals, resins, and filaments.
In its annual AM industry report released in April 2024, Wohlers Associates notes, “Shipment of AM systems for metal parts ... increased by 24.4% in 2023 ... An estimated 3,793 metal AM systems were sold in 2023, compared to 3,049 in 2022. Meanwhile, the AM industry grew by 11.1% to $20.035 billion, an estimate based on hard data received from hundreds of companies worldwide.”
The industry's growth or contraction in 2024 is expected to be part of Wohlers' 20254 report.
