The growth of the global PC-based graphics add-in board (AIB) market reached 8.4 million units in Q4 of 24 and desktop PC CPU shipments increased to 22.5 million units, according to a new research report from the analyst firm Jon Peddie Research.
Overall, AIBs will have a compound annual growth rate of -4.3% from 2024 to 2028 and reach an installed base of 119 million units at the end of the forecast period. Over the next 5 years, the penetration of AIBs in desktop PCs will be 81%.

As indicated in the following chart, AMD's overall AIB market share increased by 5% from last quarter, Intel's market share increased by 1.2%, and NVIDIA's market share decreased by -6.3%.
Market demand for AIBs was greater than supply, which was constrained by TSMC’s production and stressed by the demand for AI compute GPUs. As a result, the suppliers closed the quarter with a backlog for Q1’25, which means we’ll see an unseasonably high shipment level for that quarter. Then in Q2, the tariffs will take effect, and while it is usually a down quarter, there could be a more significant decline unless there is leftover backlog—this is a challenging planning and forecasting period.
The AIB overall attach rate in desktop PCs for the quarter decreased to 138%, down -7% from last quarter. The desktop PC CPU market decreased 7.8% year to year and increased 11.6% quarter to quarter.
The fourth quarter is traditionally up slightly from the previous quarter. This quarter's overall GPU shipments, including iGPUs, were up 6.2%, which is over the 10-year average.
“Although shipments increased over 4%—which would be expected if the traditional seasonality cycle was restored, as the chart indicates—we’re still not back to normality, and the tariffs will drive down the overall market, further corrupting seasonality,” says Dr. Jon Peddie, president of Jon Peddie Research.
In Q1’25, AMD and NVIDIA will introduce new AIBs, which may stimulate the market.
