MachineWorks Debuts Polygonica Reference App

App made for CAE defeaturing, company says.

Polygonica is a component software library for working with polygon meshes that helps companies solve complex 2D and 3D geometrical problems, MachineWorks says.

MachineWorks Ltd. makes available a new reference example for CAE defeaturing.

Polygonica is a component software library for working with polygon meshes that helps companies in a range of industrial markets solve complex 2D and 3D geometrical problems.

Preparing models, particularly models in mesh form, for CAE simulation, can be time-consuming, according to MachineWorks.

There are several challenges, which include:

  • Creating a topologically correct, watertight mesh free from strictly defined mesh errors such as self-intersections and non-manifold geometry
  • Removing small mesh artefacts that can cause the CAE remesher and solver problems
  • Removing small features that lead to the CAE remesher creating dense meshes, leading to longer run times, without improving the accuracy of the overall result

Removing and Mitigating Small Features

Polygonica has a range of tools that facilitate user-guided feature removal on “dumb” polygon meshes, where there is no known BREP structure or feature tree, for example, this is a cylinder, this is a cone, this is a NURBS surface etc.

A typical workflow involves:

  • Augmented selection—use a range of tools to facilitate easier selection
  • Deletion of selected faces/triangles from the mesh
  • Advanced hole filling—use Polygonica’s advanced curvature sensitive hole filling to close the gaps created by the deletion of the selected faces
  • Optional remeshing—use Polygonica’s remesher to improve the quality of triangles in the selected region, or across the entire mesh
