Because of their roots in film and games, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) applications were able to swiftly ratchet up the level of visualization possible, enough to persuade professional engineers, designers, and manufacturing firms to explore them for design view, ergonomic checks, and process simulation.
In the upcoming episode of DE LIVE Roundtable discussion, panelists will discuss the sometimes overlooked aspect of AR and VR—haptic, or the sense of touch.
In a driving simulator, haptic may take the form of simulated vibrations and shaking to make collisions more realistic; in flight training, it may mean using 3D-printed replicas (such as navigation yokes for the pilot trainees) to aid building muscle memory; in ergonomic analysis, it may mean deploying camera-tracked instruments (such as drills) to ensure assessment of the task's ease or difficulty is accurate.
